The school recently had a very successful visit from the Education review Office. The ERO team had this to say:

"Hard working and committed teachers have developed positive learning environments that encourage high levels of student engagement. Teacher/student relationships are mutually respectful and students interact positively with one another. Student learning is being enhanced through the effective use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and a range of other learning resources. High expectations for success and behaviour are evident and are being achieved by learning focused students working in groups or as individuals."

In 2006 Opoutere School was a finalist in the Computerworld Excellence Awards with its Digital Opportunities project which uses interactive whiteboards, wireless laptops and an online personal learning environment (KnowledgeNet) to facilitate inquiry learning.

Opoutere School is pleased to be part of the Kopu Digital Opportunities Project in partnership with the Ministry of Education. This exciting project has seen every classroom equipped with an interactive digital whiteboard, digital cameras and wireless laptops. Students and teachers use these technologies to facilitate inquiry-based learning. You can check out the details on the Digi Ops site.

Teacher Notes

A Dinosaur for a Pet

New science techniques could allow you to have a dinosaur for a pet. You need to find out which dinosaur would make the best pet for you. You will be working in a group with one or two other children on this task but you will each make your own choice of dinosaur.

Task One

Choose six dinosaurs from the list. Write the names of your chosen dinosaurs on the summary sheet you have printed.

Task Two

Research each dinosaur using websites mentioned on the research page and other resources such as videos and books. Record the information on the summary sheet.

Task Three

Each of you should choose the dinosaur you would like for a pet.

Task Four

Report to the class on the dinosaur explaining why you chose this dinosaur and describing your chosen dinosaur and its needs. You could present this information in chart form or in a multi-media presentation using a programme like Powerpoint.

The idea for this webquest came from the NSW Country Areas Program On-Line Research Modules at http://www.cap.nsw.edu.au/bb_site_intro/stage1_Modules/research_mods_stage1.htm
